Everything You Need to Know About Winter Weddings
I myself am a winter bride, married on a snowy, winter day in Salt Lake City, UT. I know what it’s like to dream of a true winter wedding and also EXPERIENCE one as a bride. Having planned my own as well as coordinated many other winter weddings, here are some tips to help you not just survive a winter wedding but be prepared for and fully enjoy your day.
Emergency Kit Items
Chapstick
In cold weather, chapped lips are inevitable! Chapstick is a little thing that can make a big difference, especially when you’re preparing for your first kiss as husband and wife.
Black or clear umbrella
You can never be too prepared when it comes to winter weddings. Having an umbrella that photographs well just might save the day!
Hand Warmers
Even if you are prepared with jackets and shawls, hand warmers can make a big difference in keeping you and your partner comfortable throughout the cold day.
Extra Shoes
My shoes were NOT warm enough to stand outside for photos. If I could go back, I’d wear thicker socks or just my most comfy boots, knowing that my shoes didn’t show in 98% of my photos due to the length of my dress.
Extra Socks
Socks in the snow are known to get wet and uncomfortable. Pack a few extra pairs and save yourself the blisters.
Blow Dryer + Extra White Dress
After our ceremony, I had to change into a spare white dress I had brought with me because my dress was SOPPING WET. My two dear friends spent an hour before the reception drying it in the bridal suite so I could wear it for the remainder of the evening
Keep your guests + wedding party warm.
Blankets make unique and functional wedding favors that can keep your guests extra cozy!
Hot chocolate, hot cider, and/or coffee stations throughout the event will help with the cold.
Hand warmers, heaters, or even a fireplace could be what your wedding and reception need to battle the winter weather.
Plan on extra travel time in case of snow.
If you can help it, try not to make people travel too far.
It is a good idea for you, your partner, your family, and your wedding party to stay close to the venue so that you won’t need to battle any adverse road conditions.
Add lighting + colors that fit the season.
Candles are the perfect addition to a winter reception because it gets dark so early.
Take advantage of the beauty of the season! There are so many seasonal flowers, foliage, and greeneries that you can use to save money.
Venue tips:
Nobody wants to have to carry a coat around all day. Include a coat check at the venue!
Be sure to check ahead and find out if the parking lot will be plowed and the sidewalks shoveled.
Include the season inside:
Decorate with pieces that celebrate the season, such as wreaths, lights, and trees.
Ice sculptures can be a gorgeous addition that can’t be used as easily in the winter.
Winter scents (candles, cinnamon, oils, etc.) instantly bring a seasonal flair to the event.
Serve warm foods such as soups, some good meat or pasta, and bread. Don’t forget the warm desserts like cookies, hot cocoa, cobblers, pies, etc.
