Should You Hire a Solo Planner or a Wedding Planning Team?
Choosing a Planner Who is the Best Fit For You
One of the big decisions to make when booking a wedding planner is choosing between a team or an individual. There are pros and cons to working with a team versus working with an individual, and there isn’t one right answer for everyone. Ultimately, it’s up to you and your partner to make a decision that feels right for you.
If you’re stuck between the two options, let me share a few benefits and drawbacks to each that I have learned over the years. (Spoiler alert: sometimes you don’t have to choose one or the other!)
Hiring a Solo Planner– Pros
There is only one contact point for you to go through. Your specific wedding planner is the person you will go to with all of your thoughts, questions, and concerns. There will never be any question about who to bring your ideas to when you hire a solo designer, and you won’t have a list of other names or references to remember.
All your information will be stored in one spot. Your wedding designs and plans won’t be switching hands or moving throughout a team. When you send your planner documents or inspiration, you can rest easy knowing it’s all going to someone you trust.
Hiring a Solo Planner– Cons
Planners who work by themselves often have limited availability. If you don’t act quickly after solidifying your date, your wedding designer may be booked with other events that day. Additionally, they are just one person, so there is only so much they can accomplish in a day.
Everything depends on one person. Hiring a solo planner means that if something out of their control occurs, there may be a last-minute scramble to keep things running smoothly. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes unknown variables arise, like sickness or travel complications.
Hiring a Team of Planners– Pros
More planners involved means more good ideas are shared. Each member brings something a unique thought process to the table, meaning that creative ideas can easily bounce off one another. Brainstorming is a big part of the planning process, and weddings are no exception.
Teams are more efficient and flexible. Working with multiple planners allows team members to delegate and handle differing tasks simultaneously. If one person is unable to complete their part, others can step in to make sure everything gets done the right way.
You will be taken care of no matter what. Having a planning team that has all their processes in place, you have a whole team on your side should the worst happen and your main contact be unavailable on the day of your event.
Hiring a Team of Planners– Cons
Booking a team may be more of an investment. Due to the involvement of multiple planners and designers, there might be more of a cost than hiring just one person. As always, it’s normal for expenses to vary slightly from wedding to wedding.
There is an increased layer of communication. Even if you’re only directly working with one team member, there are more chances for miscommunication when more people are involved. Coordinating efforts may take a little extra effort compared to working with a solo planner.
