Why We Love Wedding Moodboards (And How to Make Them)

The First Steps to Designing the Wedding of Your Dreams

Today we’re chatting about one of our favorite topics: mood boards!

Mood boards are a great way to visualize the kind of elements you’re inspired by and pick out which ones you want to incorporate into your wedding. You may have seen some fancy mood board collages online, but the reality is that making a mood board is pretty simple, and it doesn’t have to look any specific way. We love creating mood boards with our couples and watching the wedding planning process really come alive. We may be a little biased, but it’s so much fun.

So let’s dive right in! We broke down our mood board creation process into four easy-to-follow steps.

1. Discuss your ideal wedding with your partner.

Ask yourself: What kind of wedding am I interested in? Are there locations that are important to us as a couple? What time of year feels most “me”? What specific style speaks to the both of you? Think back to weddings you’ve been to over the years and pick out elements that speak to you. Once you have a rough idea of the type of wedding you and your partner both like, write down a short list of words that capture the vibe that you want your day to evoke.

Hot tip: Expectations are everything when it comes to weddings, and it’s essential that you communicate the things you’d like to happen. (Mainly with your partner, but with your wedding planner too!) There will inevitably be a few areas that require some compromise, but when you’re open about what’s important to you, it will be easier to find that middle ground. It’s generally a good idea for each person in the relationship to pick one or two things that are the most important to them, and then try to be flexible with everything else.

2. Explore wedding inspiration on social media.

One of the best things about social media is that there is an endless amount of content from which to draw inspiration. This initial search can be pretty broad – just focus on saving images that you love. Look for weddings that are similar to what you want on Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, and your favorite photographer’s blogs. Be sure to save all your inspiration in one place, like a folder on your phone, a Pinterest board, or a Canva template. Compare the images you’ve saved with the list of descriptive words you have created to make sure your vision feels cohesive.

3. Narrow down your vision.

After you have gone through lots of different wedding content on multiple platforms, it’s time to start narrowing down on the specific things that you love. Create another folder or Pinterest board where you can move the inspiration images that you want to focus on. Ideally, you’ll end up with just a handful of photos that represent the style of wedding you want. Things like wedding colors will be easier to choose after this step is done, and then you can make a plan for how you want to incorporate them into your big day.

4. Share your mood board.

Organize the images in your mood board into an easy-to-share file. Knowing your personal style and vision will help vendors serve you in the best way possible. As mentioned previously, communication is the best way to avoid misunderstandings and day-of disappointment. It’s also important to remember that as you’re gathering inspiration, you have to also be flexible. Reality doesn’t always look the same as a Pinterest photo, but that doesn’t mean that your wedding can’t be everything you’ve dreamt of.

Creating mood boards is one of our favorite parts of wedding planning! It’s such a great way to narrow down your vision and really figure out what you want on your big day. We hope these tips are helpful to you, and if you’re looking for some structure as you begin putting together you’re own, we’ve developed this Plug + Play Wedding Design Board — give it a try!
